Domain Name Registration FAQ

How do I register a domain name and web hosting with Berkshire Hosting?
Follow this link to register with an ICANN accredited Domain Registrarbetween $6-11per year. This is a savings of $40 over the Network Solutions rate that most hosting companies use! Just follow the steps to register your domain.

Where do I go to Manage my Domain?
Please visit this page to begin to make changes to your Domain.

What is domain propagation?
When a visitor types your domain name into their Web browser, their request is referred to a nameserver that indicates the physical location (the IP address) of your domain on the Internet. When your site location changes to a new IP address, or when a new domain name is added, nameservers around the world must be notified of the change. This process is referred to as propagation.

Propagation normally requires 24-48 hours. During this period, if you are transferring your domain, some nameservers will refer to the old location of your site and some to the new location. Therefore, a visitor accessing your site may be directed to either the old or new location. It is usually best to keep your previous hosting company until your transfer is verified as having taken place.

Can I register a domain name if I am not ready to sign up for hosting yet?
Yes. We can register your domain name and you can set up a hosting account later. And, we will point your domain name to Website Source Hosting servers so that when you sign up for hosting, your new domain name will be ready to use. (No transfer will be necessary.) Register a .com, .net or .org domain name up to 67 characters total for 1-10 years.

How do I Transfer my domain name to Berkshire Hosting?
Please refer to this page for Domain Transfer steps.

Do I need to pay attention to my domain registration's expiration date and ensure it is kept current?Yes. It is your responsibility to verify that the registration of your domain name is complete. And, then the domain name registration comes up for renewal, the Domain Name Registration Company ordinarily will email the contact for your domain to remind you it will soon expire. If you do not keep your domain name's registration current, then the domain registration will expire and the domain would then become available for others to register. It is your responsibility to be certain that you keep your domain name registered. You can check the expiration date of your domain's registration here.

I renewed my domain name through this web site, but now I have questions. Where can I find answers?
Please refer to this page for answers relating to a Transfer of Registrar or Renewal.

I changed my mind about the domain name that I registered. Is it too late to change it?
Once you register a domain name, you cannot "un-register" it. If you find that the domain name you chose no longer suits your business or personal needs, you should register another domain name. The domain name you originally registered will continue to be registered to you until the end of the registration period. Registration and re-registration fees are non-refundable.

Domain and Subdomain FAQ

Can I have a subdomain such as "sales.mydomain.com"?
Yes, you will be able to have your own subdomain, such as "sales.yourdomainname.com". A subdomain is basically a subdirectory or folder created under the primary Domain account which is a fully operating Web site with its own username and password and account. The main benefit of a subdomain is that it doesn't require domain name registration and fees that are associated with a full domain name.

How many subdomains can I add to my account?
Each hosting plan allows you to add unlimited subdomains.

What is the difference between a domain and a subdomain?
A domain name is a full website address totally independent of other domain names, but a subdomain depends on a domain name. If for example "yourdomain.com" is your domain name, then http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com would be your domain name's address. A subdomain name would be a name under your domain name, something like "sales.yourdomain.com". It's address would then be: http://sales.yourdomain.com. It can say anything you want instead of "sales" and the nice thing is that unlike a domain name, a subdomain does not need to be registered. This will save you money.

Will I have unlimited access to FTP?
You can create a certain number of FTP user accounts in your control panel (depends on the plan). This FTP user will get his very own access information. Because of this great feature you could offer small hosting services to mini websites that do not need their own domain name. Once you order a shared hosting account, simply login to your control panel and start creating FTP users.

How many websites can I add to my hosting account for no additional charge?
The Basic Plan Includes Only One Website. Our Buisness Plan allows you to host unlimited websites on one account.

Can you register or transfer my domains?
Yes, we can register any available .com, .net or .org domain name. For detailed instructions on transferring your domains, please visit this page. Please allow 48-72 hours for new domain name registration or domain transfers to fully propagate the Internet.

What Nameserver information should I use?
Your name servers:
ns409.websitewelcome.com
ns410.websitewelcome.com

How much bandwidth or data transfer can I use?
You will be allowed to use as much bandwidth as allotted by the hosting plan that you choose to purchase.

Marketing Your Website!

What is Search Engine?
Search engines utilize indexing software agents often called robots or spiders. These agents are programmed to constantly "crawl" the Web in search of new or updated pages. They will essentially go from URL to URL until they have visited every Web site on the Internet. Search engines read a web site's 'meta tags' and content in order to determine their ranking.

What is the difference between search engines and directories?
The main difference between a search engine and a general directory is that a directory will not list your URL if you do not first register it with them. They do not make use of indexing software agents and so have no way of knowing it's out there. As a result, their registration form will be considerably longer than just your URL. Directories are usually subdivided into categories and you have to submit your URL under the most appropriate heading.

What are doorway pages?
A doorway page is a page that is optimized to rank well on the search engines. Each search engine has it's own unique ranking algorithms (formulas used to determine the relevancy of a page to a given search term). Since every engine's algorithms differ, it is almost impossible to design one page that ranks well in all or even most of the search engines. This is why doorway pages are so important. A doorway page can be any existing page on your site or it can be a page that you create specifically for this purpose. A doorway page has no special look to it. It is simply an alternate entrance to your site that has the right words in the right frequencies, positions, and tags.

The design of the page is very important. A well designed doorway page blends into the rest of your site seamlessly. It also has relevant content targeted toward the key term. Each doorway page's content should vary somewhat with the key term. Ideally the doorway page is not just a fluff page but rather an informative, eye catching, relevant page that describes your product or service.

None of the engines are indexing my site, why?
You may not have allowed enough time for the engine to index your site. The indexing time for most engines is between two days and six weeks, if they are operating normally.
Some engines have several databases they pull results from. Therefore you may be listed in one that the engine isn't pulling from at the moment you do your search.
Frames. If you use frames on your pages, some engines cannot index frame properly.
They simply "lost" the url that was submitted. Sounds ridiculous but happens more often than you think.
Hosted on a free site. Some engines will not index pages from free sites.
Anything that can be considered spamming technique. If an engine suspects any type of spamming they will may not index your page or ban your site entirely.

What are Meta Tags?
Meta tags for your "title", "description", and "keywords".

<meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT=" your keywords here">
<meta NAME="description" CONTENT=" your description here ">
<title> your title here </title>
A Title (with a high percentage of your site's keywords, and a title that starts with an "A" is best because some search engines sort alphabetically).
A Description (with a high percentage of your site's keywords)
Keywords (to see someone's keywords, while viewing a web site, click "view" "source". Then you can see what keywords they are using (who they are targeting).

For fun, go to your competitors web sites, and click "view " then click "source" (Netscape calls it "page source".) You will be looking for something that says "Meta keywords".

After your website is designed, it needs to be "submitted" to the top search engines (Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, Altavista, HotBot...there are hundreds of them.) The majority of them charge NOTHING for you to submit a site to them. The best place to begin submitting your site is Yahoo.com. After you submit your web site there, search for "search engines" and begins submitting your site at other search engines.
